What Is a SIP Calculator?
A SIP calculator is a free tool that estimates how much your monthly mutual fund investment can grow over time. You enter the monthly amount, the expected yearly return and the number of years, and the SIP calculator shows your total investment, estimated returns and final value. It helps you plan goals like a car, a house down payment or retirement without doing any difficult maths yourself.
How to Use This SIP Calculator
- Enter the monthly investment you plan to put in your SIP.
- Enter the expected return per year. Equity funds are often assumed at 10-12%, but this is only an assumption.
- Enter the time period in years.
- Add a yearly step-up if you plan to increase your SIP amount every year (optional).
The result updates instantly, so you can try different numbers and compare them. The table below the result shows how your investment grows year by year.
SIP Calculator Formula
This calculator uses the standard future value formula for a monthly investment made at the start of each month:
FV = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) / i] × (1 + i)
- FV = future value of your SIP
- P = monthly investment amount
- i = monthly rate of return (yearly return ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
- n = total number of months
When you add a yearly step-up, the monthly amount is increased by that percentage at the end of every year.
SIP Calculator Example
Suppose you invest ₹5,000 every month for 10 years at an expected return of 12% per year. Your total investment is ₹6,00,000. At the end of 10 years, the estimated value is about ₹11.62 lakh, which means estimated returns of about ₹5.62 lakh. Real results will be different, because market returns are never fixed.
Benefits of Using a SIP Calculator
- Plan your goals: find out how much you need to invest every month to reach a target amount.
- See the power of compounding: longer periods give your money more time to grow.
- Compare options: try different amounts, returns and years in seconds.
- Free and private: no signup, and your numbers stay in your browser.
Why Start a SIP Early?
The longer you stay invested, the more time your returns have to earn their own returns. That is why even a small SIP started early can grow more than a bigger SIP started late. Change the number of years in the SIP calculator above and watch how the final value changes.
What Is a Step-Up SIP?
A step-up SIP increases your monthly investment by a fixed percentage every year, for example 10%. As your income grows, your investment grows with it. This calculator lets you add a step-up so you can see how a small yearly increase can make a big difference over a long period.
Things to Remember
- Mutual fund returns are not guaranteed and depend on the market.
- The result is an estimate. Actual returns, fund expenses and taxes can change the final amount.
- Results may differ slightly from other calculators because of different assumptions on compounding and payment dates.
